Bird News for November

Audubon / Wikipedia
purple finches

It's time for our monthly Bird News, as we turn the corner into colder weather. Mike O'Connor of The Birdwatcher's General Store in Orleans is our guest in the studio.

We talk about rat populations that can be attracted to our bird feeders, and how to control them without the use of rodent poison, which creates serious problems for birds, especially raptors who eat the rodents.

Ornithologists have predicted an upsurge this year in evening grossbeaks: the hungry birds have left Canada because of a lack of pinecones. A lot of purple finches have also been spotted.

And of course, with the Thanksgiving holiday a week away, we must touch on the habits and history of the turkeys that live in our region.
