The Massachusetts Army National Guard has released 900 public comments it received over its proposal to build a machine gun range on Joint Base Cape Cod.
In January, The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) filed a public request to unearth the responses over suspicions that they reflect an outpouring of public opposition.
The environmental group said public sentiment should be factored into whether the state approves the state's first and only machine gun range, which will require the clear-cutting of 170 acres of land.
Building the machine gun range is necessary, the Guard has argued, to provide required arms training to soldiers without sending them 270 miles to the next-nearest training site in Jericho, Vermont.
APCC expects to post the comments online at apcc.org in the coming days.
