For 2013 Red Sox, A Reduced Fever

The Red Sox World Series victory of 2004 - breaking "the Curse" - produced a communal euphoria unprecedented in New England. The celebration took many forms, but for me the most telling and poignant expression occurred several days later, when I was walking through the Wellfleet Cemetery. At least a dozen of the graves were decorated with Red Sox banners and other memorabilia, a gesture of affection and honor to local Fenway fans who had lived their entire lives in unfulfilled hope of another Boston championship.

I’ve followed the fortunes of this year’s Bosox with unanticipated pleasure, particularly because our expectations for them were so low. They resemble the long-haired Band of Idiots of 2004, in that they share a palpable respect and affection for each other and their manager, a loose and somewhat goofy, but still dedicated and focused approach to the sport, and above all, despite their multi-million dollar salaries, a genuine sense of playing for the love and fun of the game.

And who knows? Perhaps our beloved Bearded Brotherhood will have similar and ultimate success in this year’s post-season playoffs that begin this week. And if they do, those of us who love baseball will celebrate and feel a deep, warm glow of satisfaction - but we know we can not, not now, not ever, recapture and relive the intense Fever of that glorious, impossible October nine years ago
