Book Chronicles Imperiled Gay Head Lighthouse

Mark Lovewell

The Gay Head Lighthouse is an icon, both on Martha's Vineyard, and for the generations of seafarers who have referred to the light for safe passage in and out of Vineyard Sound. Due to coastal erosion the Light is now precipitously close to the edge of the Gay Head Cliffs and efforts are underway to raise money to move the light away from the brink. William Waterway’s new book Gay Head Lighthouse, The First Light on Martha’s Vineyard looks back at the history of the light and its keepers, the efforts that saved the lighthouse from decommissioning by the US Coast Guard, and what lies ahead for the lighthouse.
