Brewster Nursing Home Opens COVID-19 Recovery Unit for Hospital Patients

A Cape Cod nursing home has opened a recovery unit for COVID-19 patients from local hospitals.

The news comes two weeks after Cape Cod Healthcare said it couldn’t open a step-down unit because of a lack of staffing and resources.

Pleasant Bay Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Brewster is caring for four stable COVID-19 patients admitted from area hospitals, administrator Steven Colarusso told CAI in a written statement.

He said the facility opened an isolated, eight-bed unit Jan. 14 specifically for this purpose.

There are no cases among residents of the nursing home.

State Sen. Julian Cyr said these kinds of units play an important role.

“Having these step-down facilities is so crucially helpful to ease up the volume of patients that we have in the hospital,” he said.

The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 on Cape Cod now exceeds the first peak in April. The latest three-day average shows 61 patients.
