For this next story, we go all the way back to 1967. Israel had just defeated its Arab neighbors in the Six-Day War and captured land from Jordan, Egypt and Syria. Few people realized it at the time, but this short-lived war put the young state of Israel on an entirely new trajectory. Some see the war’s outcome as a historic triumph and almost messianic return of the Jews to their ancestral lands. Others view it as the start of an oppressive occupation, political fragmentation and a downward spiral. Either way, it almost ended very differently.
