Public safety personnel around the region are scheduled to start receiving COVID-19 vaccines today.
The town of Sandwich is hosting a vaccination clinic for police, firefighters, and emergency medical workers from Sandwich, Bourne, Falmouth, and Mashpee, and for the fire department at Joint Base Cape Cod.
The clinic will take place at the human services building but is not open to the public. Appointments have already been scheduled for those who are eligible.
Heather Harper, assistant town manager in Sandwich, said public safety personnel will receive appointment cards for their second shot at the same time.
“So by accepting the first inoculation, they are, in fact, agreeing to come back for the second one, and that has already been scheduled for them,” she said.
Hundreds of first responders will receive the vaccine, indoors, under strict COVID-19 protocol.
“It's going to be a pretty tightly monitored site,” Harper said.
She said the town hopes to vaccinate other groups in the future. Right now, it has neither the doses nor the authorization to do so.
Sandwich has created a hotline for the public to learn more about upcoming vaccinations on the Upper Cape. The number is 774-413-0364.
Right now, it has a static message, but Harper says it will be updated as the state moves through the phases of vaccination.
