Muskeget Island is a small island sitting halfway between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Few people set foot on the island because approach by air or sea takes skill and local knowledge. There is one person who visits the island regularly however: Crocker Snow Jr. He first visited in 1949 when his father bought Muskeget, and has witnessed firsthand how the island has changed over the course of seven decades. Through extensive research and his own personal observations, Snow has gathered stories of ups and downs in the populations of birds, fish, eel grass, the indigenous Muskeget beach vole, and marine mammals; all at the hands of humans, either deliberately or inadvertently.
In 2015 Snow published his observations as a book titled Muskeget, Raw, Restless, Relentless Island. A revised edition came out earlier this year.
