Showcasing the Evocative Voice of Slide Guitar

courtesy
Arlen Roth showcases the many voices of slide guitar on his new album, which features nine virtuoso guests.

Arlen Roth, guitarist extraordinaire and longtime part-time resident of Martha's Vineyard, came by the WCAI studios to talk about his new album, "Slide Guitar Summit." It features nine guest virtuoso slide guitarists, including David Lindley, Sonny Landreth, Cindy Cashdollar, and the last recorded session of the legendary Johnny Winter.

Arlen talks about the hidden prevalence of slide guitar in modern music - if you know what to listen for, these days you'll hear slide guitar in commercials, television scores, and movie soundtracks. Why is it so popular? Arlen says it's because slide guitar is "so vocal, so evocative." The album is an attempt to showcase all the various nuances of slide guitar.

Steve Junker's conversation with Arlen Roth, along with excerpts from the album "Slide Guitar Summit", is posted in the audio above - give it a listen.
