Changes in school discipline and culture

Detention, suspension and expulsion have been used for generations to address unwanted behaviors in school. Research reveals these techniques don’t change behavior, and have a negative impact on learning. They are also disproportionately doled out to students of color.
On The Point, we discuss the shift to restorative practices in school discipline, how it's implemented across different age groups and what impact this has on school culture and learning.
Guests on the program are as follows:
Jacquelyn Hartman- DEI Officer for the Town of Falmouth and Falmouth Public Schools
Beth Hampson, Partner, Pathways to Restorative Communities
Dr. Curtis Bates- Seaside Educational Consultants offers professional development sessions around restorative practices for school staff.
Nell Coogan- Restorative Coordinator and Teacher at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School
Mindy Todd hosts.
