Seattle, Juneau, and Gloucester all have fisherman’s memorials. But Provincetown doesn’t—even though it was one of the first fishing ports in the United States. Local sculptor Romolo Del Deo has a design ready, but not everyone wants to see it built.

The Fishermen’s memorial committee still plans to build a memorial for $150,000 or less. At their meeting in early November, they decided to ask an attorney to look at their relationship with Romolo. They’ll meet next on December 2.

Romolo plans to hold a “ground breaking” party for his design on November 28 at his studio in Provincetown. You can find the event on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/899126583489016/

Watch a video of Romolo describing the process of making monumental sculptures, and the Fishermen’s memorial in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPDox8dJCQE

Romolo has also built this website describing the project: http://provincetownfishermensmemorial.org/.

This piece came to us from our production partners at Atlantic Public Media through their media training program, The Transom Story Workshop in Woods Hole. Sally Helm is a graduate of the Fall 2015 class.  You can find out more about that program at Transom.org
