When the AIDS epidemic hit in the United States in the 1980s, Provincetown was hit especially hard. In the first fifteen years of the crisis, 10% of the town’s year-round population died. The events of those years still reverberate. Now, the Provincetown Cultural Council is moving forward with an AIDS memorial that’s been in the works for years.
