Court was in session Sunday for the regional-level competition of the high school Mock Trial Program. Cape Cod Academy's team was undefeated heading into the tournament, where it represented Cape Cod.
In a mock trial, students play the roles of attorneys and witnesses. This year’s fictional First Amendment case features a high school student who gets in trouble for using social media to accuse another of cheating in a music competition.
Closing for the defense was Noah Soutier, a senior from Marstons Mills. He said he enjoys how the team brings students together.
"I think one of the biggest things for me is probably the camaraderie sense of it," he said at a rehearsal on Friday. "Coming from such a small school, I think there’s this idea that we’re always the underdogs."
The team won in the first round Sunday in Worcester, making it to the “Sweet 16” in the afternoon before ultimately falling to Phillips Academy Andover.
Coach Jessica MacManus says the team, which is in its third season, has improved every year.
