A spike in COVID-19 cases reported Monday and Tuesday on Cape Cod largely stems from one indoor event, according to State Senator Julian Cyr.
New cases in Barnstable County numbered in the mid 20s this week for two days in a row, a condition the region hasn’t seen since May.
Cyr said contact tracing suggests the majority of those cases are attributable to a small, maskless gathering on the Mid-Cape, and to family transmission after the event.
“Indoor socializing without a mask remains the most efficient way — one of the most efficient ways — for COVID-19 to spread,” he said. “And I think we need to reiterate that particularly socializing indoors without a mask can be reckless.”
He said the event was not a party and shows that even a meeting can spread the virus.
Case counts are trending upward statewide, a situation Cyr called “deeply alarming.” He said he expects the increase will eventually make its way to Cape Cod.
