Topwater Fishing Provides Great Action for Cape Cod Anglers

For fishing excitement and pleasure, it's hard to imagine what beats picking up a keeper-size striper or big bluefish on a topwater lure. So here's a quick guide to topwater fishing.

Topwater lures often mimic a baitfish in distress, making them powerfully attractive to bigger fish. For fishermen, topwater lures are attractive too. They require some finesse to fish well, which is a pleasure in itself. And when fish strike, the action erupts on the surface, right in front of you, where you can see it. Often a bigger fish will strike at a lure more than once, before it takes the hook - another test of an angler's skill, as you want to keep presenting the lure in the flurry of action.

On this week's Fishing News, Kevin Blinkoff ofOn The Water magazineruns down the three most common topwater lures for Cape Cod fishing. These are:

  • Stickbaits
  • Poppers
  • Pencil poppers

We also round-up the fishing action. Big bluefish continue in good numbers, but the bluefin tuna action south of the Vineyard is slowing down. Bonito are in Vineyard Sound and off Nantucket. And... whispers, whispers, whispers about albies - which means this could be the week that bite turns on.
