The choices have been revealed for the new Barnstable school mascot: Hurricanes, Ravens, or Redhawks.
Students at Barnstable High School and Barnstable Intermediate School are being asked to vote online.
School Committee member Barbara Dunn, who chairs an advisory group that selected the finalists based on community suggestions, said it’s exciting to see responses coming in.
“I feel like we're ready to identify what that new mascot’s going to be and start rallying around some excitement around it,” she said.
The School Committee voted to drop the Red Raider name and imagery because of the evolving view in the community that mascots based on Native American people are racist and demoralizing.
The survey allows for students to make one last suggestion if they have another idea.
The advisory group plans to recommend to the School Committee whatever name gets the most student votes, but if a write-in name gets major support, the School Committee may consider that also, Dunn said.
