Meet Team WCAI

Five fit WCAI staff members are running the Cape Cod Marathon — for fun! They say they are not serious about running fast or winning a top spot. Instead, they look forward to spending a fun day together, running for their station, and cheering each other on.

We asked WCAI Marathon team members why they run and which relay leg (~5 miles each) they prefer, if any. Below are their responses.

Dan Tritle

• Dan TritleHost, Production Director
I've been running off and on for many years.  It's invigorating and makes me feel more energetic and healthy. At one point I gave it up for a few years due to a knee injury.  But I missed the health benefits from running. So, aiming to get back on the road, began a program of walking, then running, then finishing a half-marathon earlier this year. I've found that running has actually improved my bad knee, along with my overall health.

Fun fact: Having a beer at the finish line is a terrific incentive.  A beer becomes a health beverage after a run. That's my line, and I'm sticking to it.

Amy Vince

• Amy VinceHost, Producer for The Point
I’ve been running on and off since college, mostly on trails. For me, part of the fun is enjoying the sights and sounds of the woods. At times running is pure joy, others it’s a chore.

Fun fact: I’ve been part of a Cape Cod Marathon relay team two times before, but that was many years in the past, and I am pretty sure the last time I ran it I swore I would never do it again!

Elsa Partan

• Elsa PartanHost, Producer for Living Lab
I remember how hard it was for me at 13 to run a lap around my Junior High School — a whole block! Still, I went on to run track and cross country in high school and college where I made some great friends.

I’m hoping for the second leg of the relay. Let’s see if I get it.

Fun fact: Sometimes I think about a work assignment in terms of laps around the track and it keeps me focused on my goals.

Team Captain Heather Goldstone

• Heather GoldstoneHost, Science Editor for Living Lab and WCAI Marathon Team Captain
I’ve been an athlete since high school (rugby, crew, cross-country skiing, ice hockey), but only started running for the sake of running a couple of years ago.  My running joke (get it?) is that I run because I don’t have time to walk. With three young children, a job, and extracurriculars, my life is pretty busy.

What I really love about running is how accessible and flexible it is. I can run anytime, anywhere, no gym membership required. Solo runs are for meditation or catching up on podcasts, while runs with friends are social time. Either way, I’m always glad I’ve ran. I feel better physically and mentally.

Fun fact: The only B I got in junior high was in gym, because I couldn’t run a mile in under 8:15. I still can’t, but it no longer bugs me.

Sean Corcoran

• Sean CorcoranHost, Managing Editor of News
I've been a runner since I joined my high school Cross Country team at 15. There have been a few years where it's fallen out of my life. But I always enjoy the meditation time during, and the feeling of accomplishment after a run. Even feeling tired and sore is enjoyable.

I'm not sure what leg I am running. That's up to the team captain. Whatever Heather says is good enough for me!

Fun fact: Although I've been running for more than 25 years, I've never run more than 10 miles at one time. I never had to. Someday I hope to run a marathon. But up until now, my running has been just for fun or in preparation for a short race of 7 miles or less.

GET BEHIND Team WCAI. Give a gift of support here! Thank you.
