Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford is looking for a mate for its 7-year-old Canada lynx, Sylvie.
Zoo spokeswoman Sarah Henry tells CAI that a male lynx will probably arrive at Buttonwood in early spring, and the zoo hopes the pair will produce lynx kittens over the next few years.
The zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. The male will be selected to maximize the genetic diversity of the zoo lynx population in North America.
Buttonwood’s older male, Calgary, was the oldest living Canada lynx in an AZA-accredited zoo, at 20 years and seven months old. He was euthanized December 26th, suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
