Massachusetts law allows towns to provide a tax break for year round residents by reducing their property tax assessment. Provincetown selectmen recently joined Nantucket, Tisbury and Barnstable by approving this exemption. On The Point, we discuss why some believe this split tax rate is unfair while others see it as means to counterbalance the high cost of housing in the region and help create a more vibrant year-round economy. Guests on the program are: Dan Wolf, State Senator; Steve Fossella, president of the Provincetown Part-Time Resident Tax Payers Association; David Panagore, Town Manager of Provincetown; Tom Lynch, Town Manager of Barnstable; and Ed Goldman, President of the Brewster Association of Part-Time Residents. Mindy Todd hosts.
