Dwindling habitat and elephant poaching for ivory have combined to cause serious threats to elephant populations in Africa. On The Point, we talk about international efforts to reduce demand for ivory and protect habitat. We also discuss some of the negative impacts of captivity on elephants, and retirement sanctuaries that return elephants to a more natural existence. Guests on the program are: Azzedine Downes, president of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, or IFAW, based in Yarmouth; and Margaret Whittaker, Director of Elephant Programs at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Mindy Todd hosts.
