On The Point, Mark Faherty, ornithologist at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, joins our host Mindy Todd to talk about winter birds. Somewhere out there in the complete darkness of the arctic, snowy owls are hunting for sea ducks. Some of them will come this far south. Sea birds abound in our local waters; one can see hundreds of razorbills in Cape Cod Bay, and also other alcids (stocky oceanic birds that includes razorbills, dovekies, murres, and puffins).
Meanwhile, teams of birders are getting ready for the annual Christmas Bird Counts, happening all over our region. A count day might begin any time after midnight with owling, (at around 3 a.m. you might see or hear an owl) and ending at the next nightfall when the teams gather with a compilation of everyone's list of birds found. We also hear about this season's turtle strandings.
