Jewish Life on Nantucket
There is a wealth of information about the role Nantucket played in the whaling industry during the 19th century. What’s less known is the extent to which Jewish immigrants participated in the whaling industry and later in Nantucket commerce. A collaboration between the Nantucket Historical Association and the Nantucket Jewish Congregation Hirat HaYam brings a new exhibition to the Whitney Gallery: it’s titled Strangers to Neighbors, Jewish Life on Nantucket. We talk with Esta-Lee Stone, a member of the Nantucket Jewish Congregation and a curator for the exhibition.
