During a celebration event this week, staff from Buzzards Bay Coalition, who led the effort, explained what it took for them and an excavation crew to undo 80 years of farming impacts on the area.

"You could hear this whir — like a whirring, whooshing noise," Marcia Mitchell said. "And it just went really, really dark, and we just stayed there and hunkered down.”

The work will help ensure safe drinking water after a boil-water order last year that lasted for weeks in some parts of the Mattapoisett River Valley Water District.
