Local scientists examine how noise from ocean-based energy projects – like wind farm construction – could affect protected species.

New England Aquarium workers name sea turtles that were critically cold-stunned on Cape Cod in November and December, as they transition to long-term care.

A group of students found a cold-stunned green sea turtle in Eastham last Thursday. The class called Mass Audubon’s hotline and put the first turtle rescue of the season in motion.

Onlookers lined the edge of a roped-off area as each turtle was lifted from a plastic bin and set gingerly on the sand. With a little help getting past the seaweed, the turtles used their flippers to head out into the gentle surf.

New tracking devices are providing data on the behavior of loggerhead turtles who have been returned to the ocean after being cold-stunned and rehabilitated.

Staff and volunteers with Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary have rescued around 800 stranded sea turtles from Cape Cod beaches this year. That’s about 130 more than last year.

In the last few days, volunteers have rescued hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles from stranding on Cape Cod beaches. The turtles—packed into banana boxes donated by local markets—are driven to a Quincy animal hospital, where they're treated for pneumonia, fractures, and other injuries.
