Poetry Sunday: Jon Hare

Jon Hare shares the poem, "South of Nomans."

Jon Hare is a scientist working in Woods Hole. He started writing haiku at sea and emailing them to his wife as a way to keep in touch. These were "grammar-school" 5-7-5 syllable haiku. Jon explains, "The more I wrote and read, the more I enjoyed the form." He also started reading and writing sciku (scientific haiku) and tanka (another form of Japanese poetry). "South of Nomans" is a sequence of five tanka composed south of Nomans Land, an island south-southwest of Martha’s Vineyard.
