60's Icon Alice of Alice's Restaurant is Served a Helping Hand...From Thousands

Every year on Thanksgiving radio stations all over the country broadcast Arlo Guthrie’s epic song  “Alice’s Restaurant." For people of a certain age the song is an indelible Thanksgiving tradition.  This year was no different except that NPR also aired a piece about Alice Brock of the song  - a 60’s icon -  now fallen on hard times due to poor health. The report ultimately drove a lot of traffic to a Go Fund Me account, set up to help Alice who is an artist living in Provincetown. Viki Merrick, a producer at CAI, used to work at Alice’s Restaurant and has been recording Alice for years and looking after her well-being. She spoke with Alice a few days after the fund had raised more than 150k dollars.

By now the fund has raised close to 180k, enough to keep Alice going for the next few years. Alice turns 80 in February.  You find out a lot more about Alice, and see her artwork HERE

Viki Merrick produced this with our production partners in Woods Hole - Atlantic Public Media.
