WCAI's Local News Roundup: More Homeless Found in Area; Elder Care in Jeopardy

Flckr

WCAI News Director Sean Corcoran hosts a discussion with area journalists about the top local news stories of the week.

Joining Sean this week are Cindy McCormick of the Cape Cod Times; Tim Wood of the Cape Cod Chronicle; Andy Tomolonis of the New Bedford Standard Times; Ed Miller of the Provincetown Banner; Joshua Balling of the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror; and Nelson Sigelman of the Martha's Vineyard Times.

Among the stories they discuss: a survey identifies an increase in homeless people living on Cape Cod in shelters, on the streets, and in wooded camps; a report finds that the quality of care for older residents is in jeopardy because of low wages and a lack of workers here; a judge chastises Nantucket Police for choosing to interrogate a suspect for several hours rather than bring him directly for a court arraignment; Orleans Town Meeting approves a $11.5 million police station; two stars from the Back to the Future movies are coming to Chatham next month for a Back to the Future week of events to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation; Nantucket selectmen vote to relocate the town's skilled nursing home away from the water; the new owner of Fisherman's Wharf in Provincetown has big plans for the structure; teacher and former New Bedford Standard Times employee George Heath died this week as he heroically tried to save a waitress during a knife attack at a Taunton mall and restaurant; a letter written in the mid-1950s was found in the cornerstone of Martha's Vineyard Hospital during the building's reconstruction.
