WCAI's Local News Roundup: No Needle Swap in Falmouth; New Leadership on Mashpee School Committee

Internationally-known birder Vern Laux, a long-time contributor to WCAI, passed away Thursday morning at Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

WCAI News Director Sean Corcoran hosts a discussion about the top local news stories of the week with area journalists. Joining Sean this week is Sean Driscoll of the Cape Cod Times; Sam Houghton of the Mashpee Enterprise; Sara Brown of the Martha's Vineyard Times; Tim Wood of the Cape Cod Chronicle; Joshua Balling of the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror; Caitlyn Russell of the Register in Dennis-Yarmouth; Jim DeArruda of the New Bedford Standard Times; and Nelson Sigelman of the Martha's Vineyard Times.

Among the stories they discuss: the Mashpee School Committee demotes its chairman and releases an investigative report into the actions of schools Superintendent Brian Hyde; despite earlier reports, a needle exchange program is not being proposed in Falmouth; an independent state inspector finds that administrators at Heritage Museums and Gardens did not intentionally mislead neighbors about a development proposal; a rash of school bomb threats leads to an investigation; fire officials in Barnstable come back to voters for the fourth time with a new fire station proposal; Gov. Charlie Baker announces that the state can reach its carbon reduction goals by 2020; and we note the passing of ornithologist Vern Laux, a beloved local figure and a long-time contributor to WCAI.
