This week on the Fishing News, CAI's John Basile talks with Kevin Blinkoff of On the Water magazine about bluefin tuna that range from 40 to about 200 pounds. These are big enough to put up an incredible fight, but still manageable on sportfishing tackle.
To find them, you head south of Martha's Vineyard west toward Block Island and even Montauk.
It's a large area to cover and with fuel prices high this summer it's not a cheap way to fish, but often a group of anglers will hire a charter boat in order to reduce the cost.
As for what to look for in local waters this week, striped bass are turning up in the Cape Cod Canal thanks to some favorable tides. Bonito fishing has turned into a bit of a whack-a-mole situation as schools spread throughout Cape waters.
And for families, this is a great time to target snapper bluefish in local harbors. Most are only six to eight inches long right now, but they're aggressive and easy to catch. They also grow incredibly fast, so in just a few weeks they'll be large enough to make excellent table fare.
