Fishing News: Give whales the space they need to feed

Mark Faherty

Spotting whales at sea is an indication that you've found an area with lots of bait, and tuna may very well be feeding on that same bait. But you have to give the whales some space.
NOAA reminds fishermen not to troll or cast close to feeding whales. So, use the whales to help you find the general area where there's life, but don't look at a feeding whale and think that's exactly where you need to put your lure.

Humpback whales have a spectacular feeding technique where they charge vertically through bait and it's something to see, but it's unlikely any bluefin tuna will be in the immediate area. They tend to give whales plenty of room.

NOAA recommends slowing to 10 knots in areas where whales are present. Don't approach feeding whales, and certainly do not troll through them.

As for what to expect on the water this week, we are in a bit of a late summer lull as water temperatures reach their peak. The best striped bass fishing remains to the north outside Boston Harbor, and anglers are awaiting the arrival of false albacore. In the meantime, the best bet is probably bonito, but on many days, you have to cover some water to locate them.
